Michelle joined the Club ...; read Michelle's report about her experience with the Club:
Entering the woodworking workshop for the first time was a beautiful moment – I was greeted by many of the members, and shown throughout the workshop. As someone who had little to no experience with woodworking, I required a lot of help with utilising the machines and figuring out how to make my projects come to life. I was run through a safety demonstration and orientation to
each of the machines as I needed them – which meant I wasn’t completely overwhelmed with learning them all in one go.
My first project was a personalised Monopoly board – which required
cutting, using a router, and using the laser-cutter-engraver machine. Lightburn software was an entirely new program to me, and with the help of the more experienced members it became easier to use. The whole group celebrated my wins, and encouraged me at every step along the way. I felt very supported in my learning journey, and even if I forgot how to use a machine, help was always closeby. It was really fascinating to see others projects develop over time, and the completed projects in the Gallery really help to keep me inspired to try new things. I have found a new community at the Woodworking Workshop, one that I’m very grateful for.
Gary joined the Club in 2019.
Why Gary likes the Club: While out walking one morning I noticed that Shire Woodworking had set up in the old scout hall at Lilli Pilli and I enquired about what they do and decided it was for me, but work commitments restricted my involvement.
On retirement late 2022 I was able to take a more active part in the club.
The membership of the club, male and female, is varied with seasoned and first time woodworkers with an interesting mix of backgrounds. There is always somebody to assist with issues that arise on your project ranging from what timber to use, what finish to use and the use of the machinery.
I enjoy the friendly banter around the lunch table and take enjoyment from the input back into the community in the way of contribution of toys to the children’s hospitals and the sale of items produced by the club members and the plank competition toys.
The club’s maxi-days have guest speakers that talk about a varied range of topics related to wooden projects which I find interesting as well as “show and tell” of members projects, some political incorrect videos, a banquet lunch and raffle.
There is a strong community involvement and safety culture within the club.
All members are inducted in the safe use of the machinery to maximise their skills..
Axel joined the Club in 2020.
In addition to being our resident guru on all things relating to motorcycling he has joined the Safety committee and his enthusiasm for fine woodworking is contagious.
Ian joined the Club in August 2012
The Club purchased a laser cutter/engraver several years ago and Ian has demonstrated just what can be done using the laser to enhance a superbly finished piece of woodwork. Ian sets a very high standard to which all of our members aspire.
